4 Effective Home Organizational Strategies for Busy Lives

by Kelsey Lange 06 Feb 2024
Maintaining an organized home may not be a priority for many. With work, family, and countless other responsibilities, organization often takes a back seat. Continue reading to learn the four simplest, yet effective ways to maintain an organized home, no matter how busy your life may be.

1. The Power of Decluttering
You may roll your eyes at such a basic concept, but you should never underestimate the power of decluttering. This doesn’t mean taking a few minutes to go through your junk drawer and throwing out any visible garbage. This means taking a full weekend to go room by room to identify items you no longer need or use. These items should be categorized by one of the following: to sell, to trash, or to donate. Don’t make the mistake of stashing bags in your trunk “for later”. Make a trip to your local thrift store within 24 hours and drive home feeling weightless.

2. A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place
Now that you’ve cleared out the excess, it’s important to put systems in place immediately. Designate a spot for everything you decide to keep. When everything has a place, organization becomes seamless.

Invest in storage solutions like baskets or bins to keep smaller items organized. Remember, the key is to keep it simple. The less you have, the easier it is to maintain.

3. Daily 10-Minute Tidying Up
Finding time for lengthy cleaning sessions can be challenging. Instead, adopt the habit of a daily 10-minute tidy. Set a timer and focus on one room at a time. Put away items that are out of place, wipe down surfaces, and straighten up cushions.

This is especially helpful when done as a “closing shift” before bed. You prevent clutter from piling up, making it more manageable and less overwhelming. Plus, you gain the bliss of waking up to a clutter-free home each morning.

4. Organize by Functionality
Organize items based on how often you use them and where you use them the most. For example, store pots and pans near the stove, keep frequently used spices within arm's reach, and place cleaning supplies in a convenient spot. This will not only save time searching for things, but it will also make it easy to maintain order.

Adopting these four strategies will ensure a clutter-free space is in your near future. Remember, the key is consistency. Make these strategies a part of your daily routine, and soon you'll find that maintaining an organized home is not just achievable but surprisingly simple. Here's to a more organized and stress-free living space!
